The Current is published September through May of each year. It is distributed free of charge to all households in the DRCA area. DRCA, like all civic associations in Arlington, is a neighborhood organization, administered by elected volunteers. DRCA promotes inform-ation sharing and discussion on neighborhood, local and regional issues. DRCA is not affiliated with any political or religious group or with the Donaldson Run Recreation Assoc. that operates the swimming pool on Marcey Road. Meetings are held at 7:30pm at Taylor Elementary School (2600 N. Stuart Street), usually on the third Wednesday of each month (see newsletter prior to meeting) from Sept. through May. Only dues-paying DRCA residents are eligible to vote. DRCA boundaries are: Military Rd. on the east (including Marcey Rd., N. 26th St., N. 25th Pl., and N. Ridge-view Rd.); 26th/31st St. on the north; Lorcom Lane on the south (including N. Randolph and 27th Sts., south of Lorcom Lane); and Vernon St. on the west.

Omission

In the Autumn issue of the newsletter, there was an omission in the September meeting report of a motion passed at that meeting in support of maintaining Taylor Park (at N. Utah Street) as an open space. This motion was passed in response to the possible development of an infill house at the park entrance.

Nominating Committee

Carol Fontein is again chairing the nominating committee for the DRCA. If you are interested in volunteering to serve on the board, please call Carol at 243-7711. Elections will be held on Wednesday, February 23rd, 2000.

Small Parks Grant Proposal

Thanks to Dan Radke, the DRCA has received preliminary approval of two grant applications made to the Arlington Small Parks Program.  (See minutes from the September DRCA meeting.) The approval was for improvements to the Lee Heights Park (Vacation Lane & N. Taylor Streets) and to Taylor Park. The awarding of the grants will not increase our taxes since these projects are funded from an existing pool of money that is available to all communities that apply.

These recommendations will be submitted to the County Board in January for approval. Once approved, the projects would be scheduled for completion between April and October 2000. More information on the grants will be available in an up-coming issue.

Neighborhood Welcome

Do you know of someone who has moved into our area or has had a new baby who you would like to mention? Please send it to eapple@rarechance.com to be included in a new column.

What Color is the Fire Hydrant?

                                                By Ned W. Rhodes

Over the past few years, I have noticed that our fire hydrants have been painted and I have always wondered what the color code meant. I was finally able to catch some workers while they were on my block doing their monthly system cleaning. A blue cap means that you are on a high-pressure line. An orange cap is medium pressure and red represents low pressure. If you have a yellow cap, it means that it hasn’t been painted yet.

Taylor Park Clean-up Day

Dan Radke has scheduled a Taylor Park Clean-up Day for Saturday, December 18th from 10am to noon. Please contact Dan at 703-528-2870 to volunteer yourself or your group and to find out where to meet. The number of volunteers will determine the type of work performed- litter clean up, brush removal, etc. If you can’t make the December Clean-up Day, please call Dan and volunteer for the Clean-up Day in March. He is also planning a Clean-up Day in June. Dan can also be reached at: daniel.a.radke@BellAtlantic.com
