Neighborhood Conservation Plan Update

                                        By Ned W. Rhodes

Things are moving along quite nicely with the preparation of our Neighborhood Conservation (NC) Plan. We are still on track. A total of 322 surveys have been received and tabulated out of the approximately 960 that were sent out in mid-July. This equates to a 34% participation. In addition, the committee has mapped where the surveys came from and feels that we have a very balanced coverage of our neighborhood.

Since the last newsletter, two meetings have addressed the NC Plan. Approximately 15 people attended the November 10th meeting to discuss the issues of Traffic, Street Lights, Sidewalks, Curbs, Gutters, Paving, History and Parks. We received many good comments and concerns that will become a part of our NC plan. Then, at the November 17th Civic Association meeting, we presented the results of the surveys broken out into the same areas listed above. We had vu-graphs, we had numbers, we had pie and bar charts and no one was bored by a long and drawn out presentation.

The next step in the process is to put together a first draft. This is scheduled to be completed by December 14th. Then the fun begins, and this is

where you all can help us out. We will be contacting those who sent in blue sheets to ask that you help us with editing the NC plan draft. If you did not send in a blue sheet, please email me at rhodesn@softsysgrp.com or send me at note at 2749 North Wakefield Street indicating that you would like to help review the document. Please indicate which section or sections you are interested in and when we are ready, we will get you a copy to review.

On a final note, a few of the surveys indicated that some neighbors would like to have more social activities and more interaction with their neighbors. In response, the DRCA sponsored a summer social at the Potomac Overlook Park in August where we were able to meet some of our neighbors and DRCA board members. I would also like to encourage you to come to our meetings. I found the October candidates meeting very interesting and I actually changed my votes based upon meeting and listening to the candidates. So, if you are new to the area or if you used to come to DRCA meetings, but fell out of the habit, please try us again.
