Minutes of June Meeting

Virginia State Senator Mary Margaret Whipple and State Delegate Bob Brink joined Donaldson Run neighbors during the June monthly meeting at Taylor Elementary School to provide highlights of the 2000 legislative session recently completed in Richmond.

Delegate Brink called the legislative term a "mixed session" and noted that of the 3,000 bills introduced, nearly a third were either enacted or
referred for study.  Among the measures approved was legislation to improve social services, to enhance technology in the public schools, and to fund trans-portation improvements, including mass transit.  With respect to local transportation projects, Brink said that more study is needed on the proposed
widening of I-66 with care taken to "protect Arlington County."

Senator Whipple outlined the environmental bill she helped enact to protect the state's wetlands and dis-

cussed funding obtained for a number of Arlington projects, including money for a new building on George Mason's Arlington campus and funds to renovate the Arlington Arts Center.  Whipple also sought support for a constitutional requirement on the November 2 ballot that all lottery proceeds be earmarked for public education.

In other action, Cpl. Pat Donahue, DRCA liaison with the Arlington County Police Department, was on hand to update DRCA on the Community Speeding Monitoring Program. (see article, page 5). The program was initiated in response to the overwhelming number of respondents to our Neighborhood Conservation survey who stated that traffic calming was a top neighborhood priority.

Following Cpl. Donahue's presentation, Neighborhood Conservation (NC) Plan Chairman Ned Rhodes provided an NC Plan update (see article, page 2).
